Nnamdi Kanu Offers ₦1 Million Reward to Law Students Who Challenge Unlawful Stay of Release Order

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has announced a ₦1 million reward for any Nigerian law student who can present a legal precedent in which a judge granted a stay of release for someone acquitted by the court.

Kanu’s legal team, including his lead counsel Aloy Ejimakor, Jude Ugwuanyi, Nnaemeka Ejiofor, and Mandela Umegborogu, made the announcement in Abuja on Tuesday.

Speaking on behalf of the team, Ejiofor said: “Mazi Nnamdi Kanu offers ₦1 million to any law student in Nigerian universities who can find a legal authority where a judge granted a stay of execution in criminal cases, thereby preventing an acquitted person from regaining their freedom. This is a clear violation of legal principles, and it will continue to haunt Nigeria as long as it remains unchallenged.”

He went on to assert that Kanu’s prolonged detention was unlawful and lacked the backing of any court order.

Ejiofor stated: “It is important to note that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s continued detention by the Department of State Security Service (DSS) is illegal and has no legal foundation. He was initially remanded under the claim that he jumped bail. However, the Court of Appeal ruled that all charges against him were quashed due to lack of jurisdiction and violations of both Kenya and Nigeria’s Extradition Acts.”

Ejiofor further highlighted that Justice Tsamani of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal had unlawfully issued a stay of release order for Kanu, a decision that, according to the legal team, has no precedent in any country’s legal system, as an acquitted individual has never before been denied release in such a manner.
