Okowa Expresses regrets in VP candidacy, defends defection to APC

Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has expressed regret over his decision to accept the vice-presidential nomination alongside Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 presidential election, acknowledging that it went against the wishes of his constituents.
In an interview on Arise TV’s Morning Show, Okowa explained that the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) choice to nominate another northern candidate following President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure did not sit well with many in the southern part of Nigeria. He admitted that this disconnect played a role in the PDP’s defeat in Delta during the presidential election.
Reflecting on his decision, Okowa remarked, “Looking back, I believe I should have been more attuned to the concerns of my people.” Despite this, he pointed out that the PDP triumphed in 21 out of 25 local government areas in the subsequent governorship race, which he believes underscores the ongoing trust in his leadership.
Okowa defended his tenure as governor, highlighting his administration’s achievements in infrastructure development and the implementation of free healthcare programs. He also expressed confidence in the ability of his successor, Sheriff Oborevwori, to continue the state’s progress.
