Ganduje: One-Party System Not a Problem if It’s the Will of Nigerians

Ganduje: One-Party System Not a Problem if It’s the Will of Nigerians

Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has stated that there’s no harm in Nigeria becoming a one-party state—if that is what the people want.

He made the remarks on Friday after leading three senators from Kebbi State—Adamu Aliero, Yahaya Abdullahi, and Garba Maidoki—to meet President Bola Tinubu. The lawmakers, formerly with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), announced their defection to the APC.

Addressing concerns about Nigeria potentially shifting toward a one-party structure due to ongoing defections, Ganduje downplayed fears, referencing China as a successful example of a one-party model.

“We visited the President to seek his support for this new political alignment, and he has given his blessing,” Ganduje said. “On Tuesday, you’ll see the impact of this move in the Senate chambers.”

He emphasized that a one-party state isn’t imposed by force but can emerge naturally through dialogue and effective governance.

“If the good governance of our party convinces others to join us willingly, then it’s a democratic choice,” he added. “Too many political parties can sometimes complicate governance. Look at China—a powerful nation with just one party. We’re not campaigning for a one-party state, but if Nigerians freely choose that path, there’s no need to oppose it.”
