Crisis in Labour Party: Funke Awolowo Resigns, Cites Reputation Damage

Funke Awolowo, a granddaughter of the late Nigerian statesman Obafemi Awolowo, has officially resigned from her position within the Lagos State chapter of the Labour Party.
Prior to her departure, she served as the Head of the Mobilisation and Integration Team. In a personally signed statement addressed to the state party chairperson, Dayo Ekong, Awolowo cited troubling developments within the party as the reason for her decision, stating that continuing in her role had become untenable.
“I have chosen to resign from my position on the Lagos State Executive Committee, effective immediately,” the statement read. “This decision follows a period of careful reflection. It has become evident that the principles and values I stand for are no longer reflected in the current direction of the committee.”
She expressed disappointment over what she described as a deterioration of integrity within the committee’s operations, noting that it had led to reputational harm.
“It is deeply concerning that my name has been linked to actions and agendas that I do not align with or endorse,” she added.
Despite stepping down, Awolowo emphasized her ongoing dedication to public service and political engagement.
