Two Arrested in Connection with Woman’s Murder and Burning Behind Mile 12 Market, Police Rule Out Blasphemy Motive

Authorities in Lagos have apprehended two individuals linked to the brutal killing and burning of a young woman on May 24 in the Gangare area, located behind the Mile 12 Market.

According to a statement released on Monday by Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the incident was not a case of religious violence as some social media posts had suggested. Instead, initial findings point to a planned attack allegedly orchestrated by the woman’s ex-boyfriend, who is still on the run.

“Investigations indicate that this was a calculated act stemming from an unresolved conflict between the victim and her former partner, who tried to forcibly reignite their past relationship,” Hundeyin said.

The victim, originally from Nasarawa State, had been residing with extended family members from the northern region of Nigeria. Her exact occupation remains undetermined.

Hundeyin firmly dismissed the widespread claims that the woman was killed over alleged blasphemy. “There is no evidence supporting a religious motive,” he clarified.

The two arrested individuals are currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), where they are cooperating with detectives in the
