See the Number of People Arrested After the Death of Police Officer During Kano Unrest

PoliceAuthorities in Kano State have confirmed the death of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Rano following a violent protest triggered by the death of a young man held in police custody.

According to the Kano State Police Command, 27 individuals have been apprehended in connection with the unrest.

In an official statement released on Monday evening, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna, explained that the events unfolded on the evening of May 25, 2025. A local motorcycle mechanic identified as Abdullahi Musa was reportedly detained after concerns were raised by the public about his reckless behavior, allegedly while under the influence of drugs.

Haruna noted that while in custody, Musa became physically unwell and was quickly taken to Rano General Hospital. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead in the early hours of May 26 while undergoing treatment.

The news of Musa’s death sparked outrage among residents, leading to an attack on the Rano Police Division. The mob vandalized the premises, torched parts of the station, set two vehicles on fire, and damaged several others. During the chaos, the DPO suffered severe injuries.

He was rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

The police have since restored order and detained 27 suspects linked to the violence.

Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, visited the scene and extended condolences to the Emir of Rano, Ambassador Dr. Mohammed Isah Umar. He also ordered a thorough investigation to uncover the root causes of the incident and ensure those responsible are held accountable.

The Police Command extended its sympathies to the late officer’s family, praising his service and sacrifice. It urged residents to remain peaceful and allow the investigation to proceed without interference.

The statement concluded with a reassurance of the Command’s dedication to maintaining law and

order in the state.
