Abuja Lawyers to Face Trial Over Alleged Plot to Deceive AGF

Two legal practitioners, including Abuja-based lawyer Victor Giwa, have been brought before the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Apo over allegations of attempting to mislead the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) in a criminal matter.
The duo—Giwa and another individual identified as Bukola—are facing a three-count charge involving conspiracy, forgery, and impersonation. The case, filed under charge number CR/150/25 by the office of the Inspector General of Police, centers around a forged letter allegedly crafted to influence the AGF into discontinuing a criminal prosecution.
Prosecutors claim that on June 28, 2024, the accused persons produced a falsified letter purportedly originating from the chambers of a respected Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Awa Kalu. The letter, titled “Urgent and Solemn Appeal to Suspend the Arraignment of Our Colleague Victor Giwa on Charge Number: CR/222/2023,” was allegedly sent to mislead the AGF into halting court proceedings.
In addition to forgery, the defendants are also accused of impersonating a legal practitioner and fraudulently executing the forged document.
The prosecution is led by Rabiu Usman from the Legal/Prosecution Section under the authority of the Inspector General of Police.
At the scheduled court session on Monday, the arraignment was delayed due to the absence of the accused. Giwa’s lawyer, U.J. Udo, informed the court that his client was attending his sister’s burial and sought a postponement.
Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie granted the adjournment, rescheduling the arraignment for September 15, 2025, while cautioning that further delays would not be entertained.
