Tensions in Kano as Youths Set Police Station Ablaze, DPO Killed Amid Protests Over Suspect’s Death
Tensions flared in Kano State as a protest over the death of a young man in police custody turned violent, leading to the destruction of the Rano Divisional Police Station and the tragic killing of its Divisional Police Officer, M.A. Baba.
The unrest was sparked by the death of Abdullahi Musa, who was detained by the police on Sunday for an alleged traffic violation. Authorities confirmed that Musa died during interrogation, a development that provoked anger and suspicion among local youths.
Initially peaceful demonstrations quickly escalated as protesters expressed their dissatisfaction with the police’s explanation. In a wave of violence, parts of the police facility were vandalized, several vehicles set ablaze, and the DPO was fatally attacked by the crowd, who accused him of being directly responsible for Musa’s death through alleged torture.
Law enforcement officials have since arrested 27 individuals in connection with the incident as investigations continue.
