Abure-Led Labour Party Faction Demands Peter Obi’s Resignation Within 48 Hours Over Joining ADC Coalition

The faction of the Labour Party (LP) led by Julius Abure has given Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, a strict 48-hour deadline to step down from the party. This demand comes after Obi’s involvement with a newly established opposition coalition.

In a statement released on Thursday, Obiora Ifoh, the LP spokesperson, expressed the party’s strong disapproval of the coalition, labeling it as a collection of “recycled, desperate, and frustrated politicians.”

The statement read, “Peter Gregory Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate, is hereby given 48 hours to officially resign from the Labour Party after formally aligning himself with the coalition.”

Obi had earlier confirmed that his decision to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) — the coalition’s chosen party — was made with careful consideration. He was also present during the official launch of the ADC coalition in Abuja.

Ifoh accused Obi of holding covert meetings with some LP members in an attempt to persuade them to defect to the coalition.

“We are aware of several late-night gatherings where Peter Obi met with certain members, trying to convince them to join his new political alignment. However, many have declined to follow him,” Ifoh said.

He emphasized that the Labour Party has clearly stated its refusal to be part of the coalition, warning that any members involved must resign their party membership within 48 hours.

“The Labour Party will not tolerate individuals with divided loyalties or those operating with dual agendas,” Ifoh added. “Members who claim affiliation to the Labour Party in the morning but align with the coalition by evening must make a clear choice.”

Highlighting the discontent of Nigerian youths with the current political class, Ifoh said, “Almost 70 percent of Nigerians are young people who are fed up with the gerontocratic system that determines their future. The vision of a new Nigeria cannot be fulfilled by the opportunistic politicians we see in this coalition — people driven by self-interest and desperate to retain power.”

He concluded by reaffirming the Labour Party’s commitment to national renewal and called on all members to remain loyal and uphold the party’s integrity.
