Court Orders Detention of Popular Islamic Cleric Alhaja Kafilat Kaola in Kwara Prison
A well-known Islamic cleric, Alhaja Kafilat Kaola, has been ordered into custody at the Oke Kura Correctional Centre in Ilorin by an Upper Area Court sitting in Ganmo, Kwara State. The order comes in connection with a defamation suit filed against her by another prominent preacher, Alfa Taofeek Akeugbagold.
Alhaja Kaola, who also runs a school, appeared in court following allegations that she made defamatory statements about Akeugbagold. During the court session on Monday, her lawyer asked that she be released on bail, pointing to her public reputation and assuring the court she wouldn’t jump bail.
But the plaintiff’s lawyer, Ajasa Ademola, objected. He claimed Kaola wasn’t eligible for bail and pointed to her involvement in a previous case of similar nature. To back his claim, he presented a video that had gone viral—allegedly showing Kaola making derogatory comments about a judge and lawyer involved in that earlier matter.
Ajasa argued that insulting judicial officers publicly is a serious issue and urged the court to deny her bail based on legal grounds.
After listening to both sides, the judge ruled that Alhaja Kaola should be remanded in prison until her next court appearance, which is scheduled for July
17, 2025.
