Adeleke Administration Invests ₦32 Million Daily in School Feeding Scheme

HE Ademola Adeleke

Kolapo Alimi, Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, revealed yesterday that the state government is spending ₦32 million every day to support the ‘O Meal’ feeding programme for pupils attending public schools.

He also announced that Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration, in collaboration with the Ministries of Education, Economic Planning, Budget and Development, and Federal Affairs, has finalized plans to host a high-level stakeholders’ conference focused on ensuring the long-term sustainability of the O’Meals initiative — Osun’s own school feeding scheme.

In a statement, Alimi said the conference, themed “Sustainability of O’Meals for Improved Child Nutrition in Osun State,” will gather development partners and international organizations involved in school feeding programs from across Africa and worldwide.

The commissioner emphasized that the school feeding scheme is a key driver of the local economy and that the conference aims to deepen discussions on the future of such programs at sub-national levels, with particular attention to Osun State’s unique experience.

According to the statement:

“With over 200,000 direct beneficiaries—including students, food vendors, and local suppliers—the O’Meals programme not only promotes better nutrition for children but also stimulates grassroots economic growth.

Osun State’s commitment of more than ₦32 million daily highlights its dedication to improving child welfare and alleviating poverty. This effort has earned the state praise from several international agencies and development partners recognizing its steadfast focus on child nutrition and inclusive progress.

The upcoming conference, set for July 8, 2025, in Abuja, aims to build on this success by encouraging partnerships and leveraging technical expertise to further boost the programme’s effectiveness.”

The statement added that the event, organized by the Osun State government in partnership with the African Union Development Agency – New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA-NEPAD), will host global development organizations such as the Dangote Foundation, Family Health International (FHI360), UN World Food Programme, Nutrition International, Partnership for Child Development, ActionAid Nigeria, and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), among others.
