The Deceptive Charm: Why Some Politicians Embrace a False Humility During Campaigns

The Deceptive Charm: Why Some Politicians Embrace a False Humility During Campaigns; See Top Politicians Photos

One of the more perplexing patterns in Nigerian politics is the drastic transformation many politicians undergo once they assume power. During election seasons, it’s common to see political hopefuls adopting an image of humility—mingling with the masses, attending local events, eating from roadside stalls, and presenting themselves as everyday citizens who understand the struggles of the people.

This display of modesty, however, often disappears shortly after they are elected into office. The relatable persona vanishes, replaced by layers of bureaucracy, increased inaccessibility, and, in some cases, a complete detachment from the very communities they once courted.

Why do politicians resort to these performative acts? The answer likely lies in a calculated effort to gain public trust and sympathy. By mirroring the lifestyle of the average voter, they create a sense of solidarity that can be politically advantageous. Yet, once the objective is achieved, the illusion fades, revealing a stark contrast between campaign promises and governance reality.

This recurring cycle raises important questions about the integrity of leadership and the criteria by which voters choose their representatives. If democracy is to thrive, there must be a collective push—not only for accountability but also for authenticity in public service.
