I’m Out: Oyetola Shuts Down 2026 Osun Governorship Speculations

Former Governor of Osun State, Gboyega Oyetola, has categorically dismissed rumors suggesting he will contest the 2026 gubernatorial election in the state. In a clear and firm statement, Oyetola declared he has no intention of returning to the governorship race, putting to rest widespread speculation within political circles and among party loyalists.

Speaking during a meeting with stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osogbo, Oyetola emphasized that his focus is now fully on his responsibilities at the federal level as the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy. He noted that public service is not about personal ambition but about adding value where one is most needed.

“Let me be very clear—I am not in the 2026 Osun gubernatorial contest,” Oyetola said. “My commitment right now is to the success of President Bola Tinubu’s administration and to delivering results in the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy. We have a national assignment to build, and my energies are directed at that.”

The statement comes amid growing political murmurs within Osun APC ranks, with some supporters calling for Oyetola’s return to challenge the incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke. Oyetola, who governed Osun State from 2018 to 2022, lost his re-election bid to Adeleke in a fiercely contested poll. Since then, his political future has been the subject of speculation.

However, his recent declaration signals a new phase for the party as it begins to consider new faces and strategies ahead of the 2026 polls. Oyetola used the occasion to urge party members to remain united, work at the grassroots, and begin early preparations for a strong showing in the next elections.

“The future of our party lies in discipline, cohesion, and strategic planning. We cannot be distracted by rumors or personality politics. It’s time to build a new leadership base that reflects the aspirations of our people,” he added.

Political analysts see Oyetola’s statement as a move that could open up the field for fresh contenders within the APC, possibly accelerating internal consultations and primary positioning.

While Oyetola may be stepping away from the Osun governorship stage, he remains a central figure in the APC’s national machinery and a key player in shaping Nigeria’s maritime economic potential.
