Dumebi Kachikwu Says Coalition Members Regret Joining ADC Alliance

Dumebi Kachikwu, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential hopeful for the 2023 elections, has expressed strong doubts about the future of the opposition coalition, describing it as being on a precarious path.
In a recent interview on The Volume Pod, Kachikwu predicted that the coalition’s efforts are likely to fail. Since the opposition formally chose the ADC as their platform earlier this month, Kachikwu has repeatedly voiced criticism of the partnership.
The coalition includes prominent figures such as former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, ex-transport minister Rotimi Amaechi, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Kaduna governor Nasir el-Rufai, and John Oyegun, the previous chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Other notable members are former governors Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Sam Egwu (Ebonyi), Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Liyel Imoke (Cross River), as well as Uche Secondus, a former PDP national chairman.
Kachikwu questioned the coalition’s validity, pointing to ongoing legal disputes concerning the leadership of the ADC. He noted that Ralph Nwosu’s term as ADC national chairman expired two years ago, undermining his authority to transfer party leadership or form the coalition.
“This alliance is on a very unstable foundation and is bound to collapse. You cannot build anything meaningful on shaky grounds,” Kachikwu said.
He referenced rulings by courts in two different jurisdictions affirming that Nwosu’s tenure had ended, adding, “The actions taken by the ADC under his leadership are essentially invalid.”
He explained that since Nwosu’s term ended, there has been no legitimate national executive committee or party convention. Attempts to hold conventions have been rejected by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which adds to the party’s current challenges.
“These problems stem from gaps in our constitution that never anticipated such internal crises,” Kachikwu added.
He stressed that only judicial decisions can resolve the ongoing leadership dispute within the ADC.
Furthermore, Kachikwu revealed that some members of the coalition are beginning to regret aligning themselves with the ADC, noting that several have reached out to him privately to express their concerns.
He also accused opposition leaders of allegedly bribing state-level ADC officials to secure approval for adopting the party as the coalition’s platform.
