Katsina Auto Crash Claims Lives of Newly Married Couple and Others
Katsina, Nigeria — What was meant to be a lifetime journey together ended in tragedy on Sunday when a newly married couple lost their lives alongside several others in a fatal road accident along the Katsina–Batsari highway.
Eyewitnesses said the crash occurred in the late afternoon when two vehicles, a commercial bus and a private car, collided head-on at high speed. The impact was so severe that both vehicles were mangled beyond recognition, leaving rescuers struggling to free victims trapped in the wreckage.
The newlyweds, whose names have not yet been officially released, were reportedly returning from a family visit just days after their wedding celebration. Locals described them as “full of life” and “deeply in love,” making the incident all the more heartbreaking.
Katsina State’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) sector commander confirmed the incident, stating that preliminary investigations point to speeding and wrongful overtaking as possible causes. He added that multiple passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the General Hospital in Katsina for emergency treatment.
“We continue to appeal to motorists to exercise patience, especially on narrow rural highways,” the commander said. “This tragic incident is a reminder that road safety is a collective responsibility.”
The community has been thrown into mourning, with friends and relatives gathering at the couple’s family homes to offer condolences. Calls have grown for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The accident adds to a string of fatal road crashes in Katsina State in recent months, raising concerns over road safety awareness and driver discipline acro
ss the region.
