Deadly Clash in Dagaceri: Two Killed, Seven Injured in Herders-Farmers Violence

A violent altercation between suspected Fulani herders and Hausa farming communities in Dagaceri, Birniwa LGA of Jigawa State, has left two people dead and seven others wounded. The conflict, which erupted around midnight on Wednesday, is believed to have been triggered by a dispute over grazing rights — a long-standing issue in northern Nigeria.

Terror Under the Night Sky

Eyewitness accounts paint a chilling picture of the chaos. Residents say the attack was sudden and brutal, with homes set ablaze and families fleeing into the dark for safety.

“One moment we were sleeping, the next there was shouting, fire, and confusion,” said Hassan Abdullahi, a resident of the community. “They torched homes. People were running in every direction.”

Izaddeen Usman, another local, described how he and his children hid in nearby bushes, paralyzed by fear. “The screams and gunshots were everywhere. We didn’t know if we’d survive the night.”

Local farmer Malam Sani linked the violence to ongoing tensions over farmland. “Herders have been invading our crops with their cattle. We’ve tried to resolve it peacefully, but this time, everything escalated.”

Police Response and Arrests

The Jigawa State Police Command has confirmed the incident. According to spokesperson SP Shi’isu Adam, seven suspects have been taken into custody, and various weapons — including bows, arrows, machetes, mobile phones, and traditional charms — were seized.

SP Adam said security personnel were promptly deployed under Operation Salama to contain the unrest and prevent further violence. “We’re committed to restoring order and ensuring the safety of all residents,” he stated.

Community Leaders Urge Dialogue Over Bloodshed

Prominent voices in the community are now calling for restraint and peaceful dialogue. Elder statesman Malam Garba stressed the urgent need for conflict resolution. “We can’t afford to keep losing lives. We need to sit down and talk.”

Another elder, Usman Tela, echoed this call for peace. “All we want is to live without fear — to farm, raise our families, and coexist in peace.”

Human rights advocate Comrade Musbahu Basirka also condemned the violence, urging authorities to take swift and effective action. “This cycle of conflict must end. The government must do more to protect rural communities from recurring violence. These are Nigerianlives — and they matter.”
