APC stalwart and former Lagos State Government aide, Joe Igbokwe, has dismissed a fast-spreading rumour claiming he was kidnapped along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, describing the story as nothing more than mischievous fiction.
The rumour, which circulated across social media on Wednesday, alleged that Igbokwe had been abducted by unknown gunmen while travelling on the busy highway. The claim quickly gathered momentum, sparking concerns among supporters and political associates who attempted to reach him.
But in a swift rebuttal, the outspoken politician took to his verified social media pages to debunk the speculation. In his characteristic humorous tone, Igbokwe reassured the public that he was neither on the road nor in danger.
According to him, he was “safely at home, drinking champagne,” enjoying a quiet moment while watching the false narrative spread like wildfire. He described the rumour as another example of the growing trend of online misinformation and urged Nigerians to always verify news before sharing.
Igbokwe expressed gratitude to those who reached out to confirm his safety, adding that he remained unshaken by the malicious claim. He called on security agencies to intensify efforts in combating fake news peddlers whose activities, he said, pose a threat to public peace.
The political figure, known for his bold commentaries and active online presence, also advised Nigerians to avoid panic-induced reactions whenever alarming stories surface, especially from unverified platforms.
As of press time, there has been no indication of any security incident involving the APC chieftain. Instead, Igbokwe’s light-hearted dismissal has left many amused, turning what could have sparked public anxiety into a moment of online comic relief.
