The Federal Government has ordered an immediate pause on all enforcement activities connected to the proposed ban on sachet alcohol and 200ml PET bottle products. The suspension will remain in place until consultations are concluded and a final policy decision is announced.
The directive came from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) after concerns were raised by the House of Representatives Committee on Food and Drugs Administration and Control over the planned enforcement.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Special Adviser on Public Affairs to the SGF, Terrence Kuanum, confirmed that the OSGF had received a formal letter from the House Committee dated November 13, 2025. The correspondence, signed by the committee’s Deputy Chairman, Hon. Uchenna Harris Okonkwo, referenced existing resolutions of the National Assembly and advised restraint pending further review.
The OSGF explained that the matter is currently being examined in line with its responsibility as the coordinating body for government policy and Cabinet decisions. As a result, all steps, actions, and enforcement measures related to the proposed ban have been put on hold.
The office assured Nigerians that the review process will take into account public health issues, economic impact, legislative positions, and the overall national interest. It added that the public will be duly informed once a final decision on the sachet alcohol ban is reached.
