The Real Cause of the Wike–Fubara Rift

Published by on January 3rd, 2026.

The Real Cause of the Wike–Fubara Rift

The rift between Nyesom Wike and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara did not emerge overnight. Several underlying issues appear to have fueled the tension between the former allies.

First, Wike reportedly expected to exercise overwhelming influence over Fubara’s administration on the grounds that he played a decisive role in his emergence as governor. Such an arrangement, however, was unlikely to be acceptable to any sitting governor seeking independence and authority.

Secondly, Wike is believed to have pursued extended political relevance in the state beyond his tenure, with critics suggesting he sought to wield power indirectly rather than through formal office.

Another major source of friction was the composition of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Many lawmakers were reportedly aligned more closely with Wike than with the governor, often challenging the authority of the executive and complicating governance.

Control of the state’s finances also became a contentious issue. Wike was said to desire significant influence over the Rivers State treasury, while Fubara resisted any arrangement that would limit his discretion as governor.

Tensions reportedly escalated further after Fubara aligned himself with the All Progressives Congress (APC) without consulting Wike. Observers say this move was seen as a direct challenge to Wike’s long-standing belief that loyalty must flow back to him as the political benefactor.

Additionally, Wike is believed to have aspired to dominate South-South politics in the same way Bola Tinubu has shaped political leadership in the South-West. However, the political culture of the South-South is markedly different, with leaders in the region traditionally resistant to political subservience—regardless of wealth or influence.

Finally, critics argue that Wike sought extensive control over Rivers State resources as a means to build financial and political capital for future national ambitions, including a potential presidential bid.
