Iwobi Reveals Stark Contrast Between England and Nigeria National Team Setups

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has opened up about the differences between the football structures of England and Nigeria, describing the English national team environment as far more organised and tightly controlled than what he experienced during his early days with the Nigerian side.
Iwobi, who was born in Lagos but moved to England at a young age, represented England at youth level before eventually switching allegiance to Nigeria. According to The Punch, the Fulham midfielder made his senior debut for the Super Eagles in October 2015 and has since grown into one of the team’s most influential players.
Speaking during an interview on the High Performance platform, clips of which circulated widely on social media, Iwobi explained that England’s football system places strict controls on players’ movements and routines.
“Playing for England and playing for Nigeria are very different. England is a bit more strict,” he said, noting that players in the English camp are required to follow tightly regulated routines.
“At St George’s Park or in the hotel, everything is controlled — who comes in, what you eat, and how the team operates,” he added, according to reports by The Guardian Nigeria.
The midfielder also recalled some of the logistical challenges he encountered during his early experiences with Nigeria’s national team setup. He explained that players sometimes had to deal with travel arrangements and other issues on their own.
“Nigeria now, sometimes your flight is not booked properly. You might have to sort it out yourself. When you arrive, sometimes nobody is there to pick you up from the airport,” Iwobi said, as quoted by The Nation Newspaper.
He further noted that while the hospitality arrangements were generally acceptable, there were occasional inconveniences that contrasted with the highly structured system in England.
“Sometimes the power goes out in the hotel and you might not have a place to charge your phone. In England, the team hotel is very restricted — no one is allowed in. But in Nigeria, sometimes people can walk in and out freely,” he explained.
Iwobi also revealed that his decision to represent Nigeria was not immediate, as family members had to persuade him to at least give the country a chance. According to Vanguard, the midfielder first agreed to join Nigeria’s under-23 side so he could compare both environments before making a final decision.
“My uncle and my dad told me to at least try Nigeria once,” he said. “So I joined the under-23s just to see how it was and compare.”
He recalled that the training conditions during those early sessions were quite different from what he had experienced in England.
“The pitch we trained on had patches of grass, AstroTurf, and even sand on the side,” he said.
Despite the contrasts, Iwobi stressed that he has no regrets about choosing to represent Nigeria at international level.
“It took a lot of convincing at the time, but I have no regrets,” he said, according to Daily Trust. “I loved England, but I grew up in a Nigerian household, so Nigeria has always been part of who I am.”
Since committing his international future to Nigeria, Iwobi has become a key figure for the Super Eagles, earning numerous caps and playing a major role in the team’s midfield.
