Kano Govt Clears Air on Emir Sanusi Visit, Dismisses Snub Allegations Against Gov Yusuf

The Kano State Government has strongly refuted claims that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf deliberately avoided receiving the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, during the traditional Hawan Nasarawa festivities, describing such reports as misleading and without factual basis.

In an official statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, the government maintained that the narrative being circulated in some quarters was inaccurate and capable of creating unnecessary tension within the state. According to The Punch and Daily Trust, similar clarifications have been issued in response to public speculation surrounding the governor’s absence during the Sallah activities.

Dawakin-Tofa explained that the governor’s schedule coincided with a critical gathering of Nigerian governors, which required his presence outside Kano during the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations. He noted that it is customary for state governors to observe certain official obligations during festive periods, which in this instance overlapped with local engagements.

The statement further revealed that Governor Yusuf had prior communication with the Emir regarding his absence and made adequate arrangements for representation. In line with protocol, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Isma’il Falgore, alongside other senior government officials, was delegated to formally receive the Emir at the Government House.

Contrary to the claims of a snub, the government emphasized that the governor actively participated in key Sallah activities, including the Eid prayers led by the Emir and the Hawan Daushe in Gaya Emirate. Reports monitored across platforms, including The Guardian Nigeria, also indicated that the governor had scheduled additional engagements to receive other traditional rulers such as the Emirs of Rano, Karaye, and Gaya.

However, officials noted that unavoidable timing conflicts prevented him from attending all events personally, necessitating delegation to trusted representatives.

Governor Yusuf was said to have been in Lagos at the time of the Hawan Nasarawa, attending an official meeting with fellow governors, in line with his previously arranged commitments.

Reaffirming the administration’s stance, the government dismissed any suggestion of discord between the Kano State Government and the Emirate Council. Dawakin-Tofa stressed that the relationship remains “cordial and rooted in mutual respect,” with both institutions committed to maintaining peace, unity, and progress in the state.

The government also urged residents and the general public to disregard unverified reports circulating on social media and instead rely on credible news platforms such as The Nation Newspaper and Daily Times for accurate updates.
