Gov Seyi Makinde Approves N10,000 Transport Relief for Oyo Workers As Fuel Price Surges

Gov Seyi Makinde Approves N10,000 Transport Relief for Oyo Workers As Fuel Price Surges

In response to the rising cost of transportation following recent increases in fuel prices, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has approved a N10,000 monthly transport allowance for workers in the state as a temporary relief measure.

The development, confirmed on Monday, comes amid growing concerns over the impact of higher petrol prices on workers’ daily expenses. According to a statement by the Oyo State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kayode Martins, the approval followed sustained engagement between labour leaders and the state government. Reports by The Punch and The Guardian Nigeria have also highlighted similar calls for intervention across various states as Nigerians grapple with economic pressures.

Martins explained that the allowance was granted after the NLC formally appealed to the government, stressing the urgent need to support workers facing escalating transportation costs. He noted that the initiative is expected to ease the burden on the workforce, particularly those who rely heavily on daily commuting.

The transport support is scheduled to commence in April 2026 and will run for an initial period of three months, according to the governor. Governor Makinde made this clarification during the launch of the N1.5 billion YEAP-SAfER disbursement programme, where he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to cushioning economic hardships.

“This intervention is aimed at providing immediate relief while we continue to explore sustainable solutions to the current economic challenges,” the governor indicated, as echoed in coverage by The Nation Newspaper.

The move has been widely viewed as a direct response to labour advocacy, with stakeholders noting that such palliative measures are becoming increasingly necessary as inflation and fuel costs continue to rise. Analysts quoted in Daily Timessuggest that while temporary allowances offer short-term relief, broader economic reforms will be crucial for long-term stability.

Further details regarding the disbursement process and eligibility are expected to be released by the state government in the coming days.
