Oyo Orders Traders, Drivers to Relocate to Iwo Road Bus Terminal to Ease Traffic

Oyo Orders Traders, Drivers to Relocate to Iwo Road Bus Terminal to Ease Traffic

The Oyo State Government has directed motorists and traders operating along Iwo Road in Ibadan to vacate the roadside and move to the government-designated Iwo Road Bus Terminal Park. The move aims to reduce traffic congestion, restore order, and improve environmental conditions in the area.

A statement issued on Thursday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, noted that the Chairman of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), Major Adekoya Adesagba, led an enforcement and inspection team to ensure compliance with the directive. The action follows reports that commercial drivers and traders had abandoned the modern terminal in favour of roadside operations, causing heavy gridlock on adjoining roads.

“The continued presence of traders on the roadside could lead to serious traffic congestion and accidents,” Adesagba said, adding that the encroachment reduces available space for vehicles and increases the risk of crashes. He further stressed that operating outside the designated terminal undermines the purpose of the government-built facility. The Nation had earlier reported that similar challenges have been observed at other modern terminals across Ibadan.

Adesagba also highlighted that disunity among operators, often based on local government affiliations, has exacerbated the problem. He called for cohesion among all transport operators and traders, reiterating that full compliance with the government directive is mandatory.

“All motorists and traders should relocate fully into the bus terminal provided by the government. No one should operate outside the designated facility,” he warned.

The Iwo Road Bus Terminal is one of several modern transport hubs established by the Oyo State Government as part of its urban renewal and traffic management initiatives. According to Vanguard, the terminals are intended to streamline public transport, improve commuter experience, and provide a safer and more organised environment for both drivers and traders.

Despite the availability of these facilities, authorities have consistently noted that some operators continue to prefer roadside trading, worsening traffic flow and contributing to disorder along major routes. The government has assured that continued defiance will attract strict enforcement measures to uphold order and public safety.
