El-Rufai Returns to ICPC Custody After Mother’s Burial, Faces Fresh Court Proceedings

Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has been remanded back in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) following a brief compassionate release to attend the burial of his mother.
El-Rufai was earlier granted temporary leave on March 27, 2026, after the passing of his mother in Cairo. The burial, which took place in Abuja on Sunday, drew a host of prominent political figures from across party lines, as reported by Vanguard.
Upon his return, the former governor resumed legal proceedings on Tuesday, first appearing before the Kaduna State High Court over a separate case instituted by the anti-graft agency. However, the hearing could not proceed due to the absence of a co-defendant, prompting the court to adjourn the matter until April 10, 2026 (Daily Trust).
Following the adjournment, El-Rufai was subsequently taken before the Federal High Court in Kaduna, where his bail application came up for hearing. The court had earlier scheduled March 31 to consider the request, marking a critical stage in the ongoing legal battle.
After the court sessions, authorities returned him to ICPC custody pending further proceedings, underscoring the continuation of the legal process against the former governor. Observers note that the case has attracted significant public attention, given El-Rufai’s political stature and recent developments surrounding his arrest, according to Channels Television.
The unfolding legal situation is expected to intensify in the coming weeks as the courts resume hearings and determine key applications, including his bid for bail.
