Adeleke is not popular; otherwise, why ₦3.6 billion for vote-buying?

Governor Ademola Adeleke is not as popular as his handlers would have Nigerians believe. If he truly enjoys overwhelming support in Osun State, why would his camp allegedly set aside ₦11 million per ward, amounting to ₦3.6 billion across the state, for vote-buying, ?
This is clearly not an ordinary election fund meant for party agents. From the accounts and materials circulating, it is a slush money allegedly deployed to induce voters and compromise their choices.
What is even more disturbing is the allegation that citizens are first subjected to oath-taking before receiving an upfront ₦10,000, with a promise of another ₦10,000 on August 15, allegedly on the condition that they vote for Adeleke.
Reports further allege that those taking the oath are made to invoke curses upon themselves and declare that they will perish if they fail to vote for Adeleke.
Vote-buying is a criminal offence under Nigeria’s Electoral Act 2026. Both the giver and taker are liable to a fine or imprisonment.
A genuinely popular candidate will seek votes through persuasion, performance and public confidence—not through cash inducements and oaths. Governor Adeleke should campaign on the strength of his achievement, not inducing the voters with peanuts or chicken feed that will not improve their well-being.
