A National Disgrace — Peter Obi Condemns Deadly Terror Attacks in Niger

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has described the recent terrorist attack on a community in Niger State, which left dozens dead and several others abducted, as a **national disgrace**, calling for urgent and decisive action to end Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.
In a statement shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, Obi lamented the continued bloodshed across the country, stressing that the persistent failure to safeguard lives has become unacceptable. He urged the government to adopt a united, strategic, and results-driven approach to tackling insecurity.
According to him, it is alarming that Nigerians are being ushered into a new year with recurring violence and mass killings. He cited the deadly assault on Kasuwan Daji Market in the Domo community of Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State, where over 30 people were reportedly killed in a brutal terrorist invasion.
Obi also referenced a series of similar attacks in other states, including the killing of residents in Bong village, Plateau State; bandit assaults on communities in Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State; and the New Year’s Day attack on Unguwar Naino community in Katsina State, which resulted in multiple casualties and injuries.
He described the recurring attacks as part of a troubling pattern that has gradually been accepted as normal, warning that such complacency poses a grave danger to national stability. Obi emphasized that the inability of the state to guarantee the safety of its citizens represents a deep moral and leadership failure.
“The protection of human lives must be the highest priority of any responsible government,” he stated, adding that Nigeria cannot continue to accept daily killings as a routine occurrence.
Expressing sympathy to families affected by the violence across Niger, Plateau, Kano, Katsina, and other parts of the country, Obi said the pain of such loss is beyond words. He assured grieving communities that the nation stands with them in mourning, and called for collective resolve to bring an end to the cycle of terror.
“This violence must stop,” he concluded.
