Women from Isiama Afara Ukwu in Abia State, the hometown of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), have staged a peaceful protest. They are demanding the immediate release of Kanu, who has been held by the Nigerian government.
Carrying portraits of Kanu and singing protest songs, the women called for his release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), where he has been detained since June 2021. Kanu was extradited from Kenya under accusations of terrorism and treasonable felony.
Reports indicate that the South-East Governors Forum plans to meet with President Bola Tinubu to discuss Kanu’s release. Similarly, the Labour Party caucus in the South-East Houses of Assembly has also demanded his release, arguing that it would distinguish genuine activists from criminals and help reduce insecurity in the region.
Additionally, over 50 federal lawmakers from various political parties and regions have written to President Tinubu, urging him to facilitate Kanu’s release. They appealed to the President to use his powers under Section 174 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 107(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, believing that this action would help restore peace in the South-East.
