AFCONQ: Sports Journalists Kidnapped While Traveling to Uyo in Anambra

A group of sports journalists was kidnapped in the Isseke community of Ihiala Local Government Area in Anambra State, according to reports from News360 Nigeria. They were en route to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to cover the upcoming African Cup of Nations qualifying match between Nigeria and Libya, set to take place at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Friday.

Sources indicate that approximately 11 journalists were traveling in a bus through Isseke when they were abducted on Wednesday.

On Thursday morning, it was reported that nine of the journalists had been rescued, but one, identified as Kola, was found deceased. Four others remain unaccounted for.

Anambra police have confirmed the incident. SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the state police command, stated that six members of the media crew were successfully rescued.

Ikenga added, “Joint security forces have managed to rescue six members of the media team who were taken while traveling from Lagos to Uyo along the Isseke-Orlu Road in Ihiala. Operations are ongoing to locate the seventh crew member. Further updates will be provided as they become available.”
