Amotekun Busts Teenagers with Traditional Bulletproof Vest in Major Crime Sweep

The Ondo State Security Network, known as Amotekun, has apprehended a teenager named Sadiq Ayodokun, who was found wearing a traditional bulletproof vest intended to shield him from security forces.

Ayodokun, along with 20 others, was paraded at the Alagbaka office on Tuesday for alleged involvement in serious crimes including murder, robbery, kidnapping, and theft. He claimed that the traditional vest, which he inherited from his father, an herbalist, was used for the first time during this operation. Despite its use, he usually carries it on his missions.

Chief Adetunji Adeleye, the Commander of Amotekun, highlighted that criminals are increasingly employing various tactics to avoid capture and continue their illicit activities. He noted a rise in attacks on motorcyclists, also known as ‘okada riders,’ with some being killed during these incidents.

Adeleye emphasized the evolving nature of criminal methods, stating, “As we develop new strategies to combat them, criminals also adapt their techniques. With the support of Ondo State residents providing reliable information, we will address these challenges.”

He elaborated on specific criminal tactics, such as gangs targeting okada riders by using weapons to incapacitate them before stealing their bikes. These stolen motorcycles are then quickly disassembled and smuggled out of the state. Additionally, some groups break into unoccupied homes, stealing valuables and selling them across local governments.

Adeleye warned against buying cheap, second-hand items, as this may contribute to the problem by creating a market for stolen goods. He also described the theft of copper wires from houses, which are melted down and sold. Furthermore, suspected kidnappers have been apprehended near ransom payment locations and are providing valuable information.

The commander noted a significant increase in criminal activity along the borders of Ose, Edo, Akoko, and Kogi states. He assured that Amotekun is intensifying efforts, including strategic deployments, to improve security in these border areas. The arrested suspects will be formally charged in court for their various offenses.
