Anambra Nurse Arrested for Brutalizing Nephew with Heated Iron

A 38-year-old nurse, Amarachukwu Nzekwe, has been detained by authorities in Anambra State for severely injuring her 13-year-old nephew with a hot laundry iron.

The arrest came after the incident, which was widely shared on social media, was brought to the attention of the state Commissioner for Women’s Affairs and Social Welfare, Chidimma Ikeanyionwu. According to a press release issued on Wednesday, Nzekwe, a resident of Ezinifite in Aguata Local Government Area, was apprehended in coordination with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare.

Nzekwe claimed that the abuse was a form of discipline following the theft of her belongings by the boy. She admitted to using a heated iron to inflict the injuries and subsequently locked him in without medical care.

The statement noted, “The incident, which garnered significant social media attention, was reported to Commissioner Ify Obinabo on August 18, 2024. The following day, Nzekwe was arrested.”
Commissioner Ify Obinabo expressed outrage over the case and vowed to ensure justice for the young victim. She warned that such violent acts would not be tolerated and urged potential offenders to reconsider, as the state would enforce the law strictly.
The nurse has been transferred to the police for further investigation and will face legal proceedings in court.
