Angry Protest in Ogun After Speeding Driver Kills Pedestrian and Runs Away

Residents of Sagamu in Ogun State were thrown into unrest on Monday following the tragic death of a man, Jide Oyeleke, who was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver on Ewusi Road.

The fatal incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Sunday when a Toyota Camry, reportedly moving at high speed, veered off course and crashed into a barber shop, hitting Oyeleke in the process. Witnesses at the scene said the driver lost control of the vehicle moments before the collision.

Confirming the accident, Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), said the crash was allegedly caused by reckless driving, and the driver fled the scene immediately afterward.

“A fatal crash occurred along Ewusi Road in Sagamu, between Bright Fashion Junction and Royal Chemist. It was allegedly caused by some suspected internet fraudsters, popularly known as Yahoo boys. The driver lost control due to excessive speeding and slammed into the shop, fatally injuring the victim, Jide Oyeleke,” Akinbiyi said.

The tragic incident sparked protests on Monday morning as angry youths took to the streets demanding justice. The demonstrators also called on authorities to install speed bumps along the road to prevent similar accidents.

Oyeleke’s body was later moved to the morgue at Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Ago-Iwoye, while the vehicle involved in the crash was recovered and taken to the Sagamu police station for investigation.

In a related case, PUNCH Metro earlier reported another deadly road accident involving a 500-level student of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Victor Onakoya. Onakoya allegedly struck and killed a couple on a motorcycle along Igan Road in Ago-Iwoye. The accident provoked a mob reaction, and the suspect was taken into custody by the police to prevent a lynching.

The crash involved a Toyota Camry with the license plate JJJ 168 GY and a red Bajaj motorcycle registered as KNN 873 ZY.

Authorities have urged motorists to avoid reckless driving and adhere to speed limits, especially in residential areas, to reduce avoidable loss of life.
