Army Reopens Imo’s Malaysia Market After Soldiers’ Deaths Linked to Suspected IPOB Attack

The Nigerian Army has officially reopened the Rescue Market, also known as Malaysia Market, located in Onuimo, Obowo Local Government Area, Imo State. The market had been shut down three weeks earlier following a deadly attack on a military checkpoint by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), which resulted in the deaths of two soldiers.
Maj-Gen. Hassan Dada, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 82 Division, personally oversaw the reopening of the market. Addressing traders on Friday, Dada called on the local community to take an active role in securing their surroundings by collaborating with security forces.
During his speech, he emphasized that while the military’s primary duty is to protect civilians, acts of violence against soldiers will not be tolerated. “We cannot condone the killing of our soldiers. If you see something wrong and remain silent, it will eventually affect you,” he warned.
As part of his community outreach efforts, Dada revealed that he had instructed his commanders in both Imo and Abia states to regularly engage with local residents to understand their security concerns.
The GOC also expressed concern over the low number of Igbo youths applying for the army’s recruitment exercises, encouraging young people to view military service as a respected and worthwhile career.
In an effort to ease the hardships caused by the market closure, Dada distributed palliative items, including 10-kg bags of rice and vegetable oil, to elderly traders. He acknowledged the difficulties faced by vendors due to the market’s closure and assured the community that the military stands with them, especially during the festive season.
“We recognize that some of you have faced challenges in continuing your businesses. The palliative is a gesture to show that the army is always there for the people,” he stated.
The Acting Chairman of the market, Mr. Jerry Uzodinma, expressed gratitude to the GOC for the military’s support, affirming that the traders would continue to back the army in maintaining peace and security. Traditional leaders from affected communities in both Imo and Abia states also thanked the military for its ongoing contributions to security in the region.
