The Association of Southern Nigerian Students (ASONIS), Oyo State Chapter, recently convened a crucial meeting with Comrade Odoba Abel Oche, the State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Oyo State. The meeting, led by ASONIS Chairman Senator Joy Olawuyi, The Vice President National Affairs Comrade Amoo Adesoji Oluwasegun aimed to address the challenges faced by Daily Part-Time (DPP) students in their quest for NYSC mobilization.

The NYSC program is a critical component of the Nigerian higher education system, designed to foster national unity and development through youth service. However, DPP students have consistently faced challenges in meeting the requirements for NYSC mobilization. This has led to concerns about the fairness and inclusivity of the NYSC program.

The primary goal of the meeting was to highlight and find solutions to the difficulties encountered by DPP students during the NYSC mobilization process. Comrade Oche provided insights into the challenges faced by DPP students and clarified the NYSC’s stance on mobilization. He emphasized that the NYSC program is designed for full-time students and that the regulations are in place to ensure fairness and compliance with the law.

Comrade Oche reiterated the following key requirements for NYSC mobilization:

The individual must be a Nigerian citizen.

The individual must not be over 30 years of age.

The individual must be registered in a full-time course, not a part-time related program.

Comrade Oche acknowledged the challenges faced by DPP students and assured that the NYSC would continue to work towards finding solutions. He emphasized that DPP graduates would receive a Certificate of Exemption or Certificate of Exclusion, which holds the same value as the NYSC certificate in terms of recognition.

The meeting concluded with several recommendations and resolutions:

Comrade Amoo Adesoji Oluwasegun urged institutions to take responsibility for ensuring that their students meet the requirements for NYSC mobilization.

He emphasized the importance of raising awareness among students about the requirements and challenges associated with NYSC mobilization.

The meeting emphasized the importance of collaboration between the NYSC, institutions, and other relevant agencies to address the challenges faced by DPP students.

He also stated It’s crucial for students to thoroughly research the programs they’re interested in, including the requirements and any associated information. This is particularly important for students considering part-time programs, such as Daily Part-Time (DPP) or Part-Time (PT) programs.

Students opting for part-time programs should not expect to be mobilized for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program. Instead, they should expect to receive an exception certificate or exclusion certificate. Only full-time students are entitled to NYSC mobilization.

Comrade Amoo Adesoji Oluwasegun, Vice President of National Affairs, emphasized the importance of institutions being proactive in addressing student-related issues. He specifically advised the National Universities Commission (NUC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) to be responsive to student concerns.

Furthermore, Comrade Amoo encouraged the Joint Admissions and Matmissions Board (JAMB) to be more flexible in its policy-making, as this would help reduce stress on students. He reiterated that the welfare and wellness of students are of utmost importance.

In light of this, students should take the initiative to understand the requirements and implications of their chosen programs. By doing so, they can make informed decisions and avoid potential disappointments.
