At Least 25 Dead in Yemen Flash Floods

Flash floods have resulted in at least 25 fatalities in Yemen’s northwestern province of Al-Mahwit, according to local health officials. The floods, caused by more than 24 hours of intense rainfall, led to the collapse of three dams and the destruction of numerous homes in the Malhan district on Tuesday.
Ongoing rescue efforts are searching for several missing villagers. Earlier this month, heavy rains and flash floods in Yemen’s northern provinces of Hodeidah and Hajjah resulted in 45 deaths and damaged over 12,000 homes, as reported by local health authorities.
The World Health Organization has raised alarms about the risk of disease outbreaks due to contaminated water and inadequate sanitation during this rainy season. Yemen has been embroiled in civil war since late 2014, when the Houthi group took control of several northern provinces, prompting the Yemeni government to evacuate the capital, Sanaa.
