Bauchi Ex-Governor: “Our Generation Has Failed Nigeria”

Former Bauchi State Governor Mohammed Abubakar has urged Nigerian youths to take charge of the nation’s future. Speaking at the First Bauchi SDGs Youth Summit 2024 on Tuesday, he acknowledged that his generation, including himself, has not provided the leadership that the country deserves.

“My generation has failed,” Abubakar stated. “It seems we no longer have the solutions needed. Despite the opportunities given to us, we’ve repeatedly led Nigeria to the brink of crisis.”

He emphasized the importance of investing in the youth during his administration, explaining, “I intentionally filled my executive council with young people, selecting them based on their capabilities rather than their connections. I understood that one day I would have to step aside, and the youth would need to be ready to take the lead.”

Abubakar cautioned that if young people are not properly prepared for future leadership roles, the country could face serious consequences. “If we neglect to train them now, we risk handing over leadership to individuals who are unprepared when the time comes for us to step down,” he warned.

He called on the youth to embrace the challenge of reshaping Nigeria’s narrative.

In addition, Bauchi State Commissioner for Youth and Sport, Salis Gamawa, encouraged young people to seek innovative opportunities instead of relying solely on traditional white-collar jobs. He noted that the system has evolved, and youths must adapt their mindsets accordingly.

Gamawa cautioned against being merely critical of government leaders, stating, “Life is a project, and the best thing you can do is project a better image of yourself. Young people must identify where they are lacking and understand what true leadership entails.”

He concluded by advising youths to learn to lead themselves effectively before aspiring to lead others.

The summit drew numerous attendees, including students from secondary and tertiary institutions, as well as various youth groups from the region.
