Benue Governor Takes Bold Stand: Suspends Attorney General Over Controversial Lawsuit Against EFCC
MAKURDI – Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, the governor of Benue State, has suspended Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Fidelis Bemsen Mnyim, due to his unilateral decision to participate in a lawsuit challenging the legitimacy of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC).
The state government has not disclosed specific details regarding the lawsuit initiated by Mnyim, which the governor claims was undertaken “ultra vires” (beyond his legal authority). Governor Alia emphasized that Mnyim failed to consult him before taking such significant action, leading to his indefinite suspension until a satisfactory explanation is provided.
In a statement from Sir Tersoo Kula, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Alia, it was noted that the commissioner’s actions were inappropriate, given that the state views the EFCC and ICPC as partners in combating corruption and addressing financial misconduct within the state.
Kula stated, “The governor has instructed Barr. Mnyim to proceed on indefinite suspension. This decision was announced during a press conference following the Benue State Executive Council meeting.”
Alia reiterated that all appointees must engage in proper consultations before acting, especially on sensitive issues. He remarked, “My administration is committed to holding accountable those who have misappropriated state funds, with the assistance of the EFCC and ICPC. It is contradictory to challenge these agencies when they are helping us in this fight.”
He concluded by affirming that Mnyim had not sought his permission for the legal action and would remain suspended pending further clarification of his actions.
