British Army Recruitment Open to Nigerians and Other Commonwealth Citizens; See Eligibility Details for Registration

Starting today, August 19, 2024, the British Army is accepting applications from Commonwealth citizens, including Nigerians, for various roles within its ranks. The application period will close on August 26, 2024.

The positions available include roles such as musician, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineer, Royal Engineers Technician and Tradesman, and paratrooper. This recruitment drive highlights the important contributions of Commonwealth soldiers to the British Army.

It is important to note that applications must be submitted through the Recruit Bounty Referral Scheme (British Army member referral), except for those applying as musicians. Musicians must meet specific musical standards detailed on the Army Musicians page.

Medical Screening

A key component of the recruitment process involves medical screening for Sickle Cell traits, which are more common among certain Commonwealth populations. While having the Sickle Cell Trait does not disqualify candidates outright, those identified as higher risk will need to undergo a diagnostic blood test before participating in fitness assessments to ensure their safety.

Eligibility Criteria

Soldiers:

– Candidates must be at least 16 years old to apply, with applications beginning from 15 years and 7 months old. Assessment can start at 15 years and 9 months old.

– Those under 17 years and 6 months will first attend the Army Foundation College before starting standard training for Junior Soldiers.

– Enlistment must occur before the age of 36.

Officers:

– Applicants must be between 18 and 29 years old. Age limits may be higher for specialist roles such as doctors, with exceptions made for candidates over 30 on a case-by-case basis.

– Candidates need 35 ALIS points from 7 subjects, including a minimum grade of C/4 in English Language, Maths, and either Science or a foreign language.

– Additionally, they need 72 UCAS Tariff points from 3 subjects.

Fitness and Lifestyle Requirements

All applicants must pass several fitness tests, including the Multistage Fitness Test (Beep Test), Seated Ball Throw, and Mid Thigh Pull. The Army provides guidance on how to meet fitness requirements and stresses the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Applicants are encouraged to quit smoking and adopt a balanced diet to meet the Body Mass Index (BMI) requirements.

Tattoos and Piercings

Tattoos are allowed under certain conditions: they must not be offensive or visible in a passport photo. Hand and neck tattoos are now permitted, but head and face tattoos are not. Large piercings that alter appearance, such as flesh tunnels, may disqualify applicants. All jewelry must be removed during physical activities.

Criminal Convictions

The British Army takes a rehabilitative approach to criminal convictions. Applicants must disclose any unspent convictions, as dishonesty could result in legal consequences.

Joining the Army Cadet Force

For those not yet old enough to enlist, the Army Cadet Force offers opportunities to engage in military-themed activities, sports, and outdoor adventures, including developing survival skills, participating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and earning additional qualifications.

Application Process and Timeline

Applications are open from August 19, 2024, to August 26, 2024. Late applications will not be considered. Candidates must be prepared to travel to the UK for further assessment in October and November 2024, with basic training set to start between January and March 2025.
