Catholic Priest Shoots Boy Dead Over Fireworks Dispute During New Year Mass in Imo

A Catholic priest is under scrutiny after allegedly shooting a boy dead for setting off fireworks during a New Year Mass on January 1, 2025, in Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area, Imo State.

According to a post shared on Facebook by the ‘For The Love Of Anambra’ page on Wednesday, the unnamed priest fired the shot within the church grounds. The incident has deeply shocked the local community, sparking outrage and calls for a full investigation into the matter.

The post stated, “The tragic event has left the community in a state of grief, with residents demanding a thorough inquiry to uncover the truth behind this disturbing incident.”

Reactions to the incident have flooded social media. One user, Buka Tee, urged authorities to ensure a proper investigation: “This issue must be thoroughly investigated. It cannot be swept under the rug. It’s deeply upsetting.”

Another user, Malachy Chukwunyereugo, expressed a strong stance, writing, “He will spend the rest of his life behind bars.”

Meanwhile, Icha Joseph defended the priest’s actions, suggesting that it might have been an act of self-defense given the growing insecurity in the region: “Rev Fathers are often targeted in the East; they have to be cautious. The police should also clamp down on dangerous activities like fireworks during these insecure times.”

Steve Idealmann echoed similar concerns, stating, “The priest shouldn’t be judged hastily, especially considering the rising tensions in our churches. People’s behavior is becoming unpredictable. Fireworks should be aimed into the sky, not at worshippers.”

Lastly, Elochukwu Obiegbu raised questions about the priest’s access to a firearm: “Who gave the priest a gun, and who authorized it? That’s the first question that needs to be addressed.”

This incident has certainly sparked a wider conversation on safety, security, and the role of firearms in religious settings.
