A suspected kidnapper was killed by Delta State Police operatives along the Ughelli-Patani Road during a special operation targeting the Ughelli area.

In a statement released on Friday, Bright Edafe, the State Police Public Relations Officer, revealed that the suspect was neutralized during a sting operation conducted by a police team led by Julius Robinson. The operation was initiated based on credible intelligence concerning frequent armed robberies and kidnappings in the Adjekota-Ogor area of Ughelli North Local Government.

According to Edafe, “The police team, acting on credible intelligence, raided a criminal hideout at an abandoned filling station along the Ughelli-Patani Road at approximately 23:47 on June 20, 2024. The suspects, upon spotting the police, opened fire. The operatives responded decisively, leading to a gunfight in which one suspect sustained critical injuries while the others fled.”

The injured suspect was taken to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment. The police recovered two Baretta pistols and five rounds of live ammunition from the scene. A manhunt for the remaining suspects is ongoing.

In a related incident on June 19, 2024, special operatives deployed by the Commissioner of Police conducted a raid in Sapele, resulting in the arrest of four suspects.

State Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, urged youths to avoid involvement in cult activities and crime, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to reducing crime in Delta State.
