The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced that Nigerians will start using a new three-in-one identity card within the next two months. This innovative card, which integrates identity, financial, and social services, is set to be available nationwide by August.
An anonymous senior member of the implementation team revealed this development in an exclusive interview with Saturday PUNCH. The official confirmed that the commission has been diligently working to meet its launch targets and that the rollout is currently in the testing and deployment phase.
“We originally planned for a July launch, although there have been minor delays. We are still optimistic about releasing it between July and August. Any changes to this timeline will be communicated to the public,” the official stated.
He further explained, “Deploying new technology involves extensive work, including configuring the card, enabling outlets, and setting up the digital wallet. We are currently conducting tests and making sure everything functions properly. The deployment process is underway, and the portal for accessing these services is being set up to ensure scalability.”
The official also highlighted the ongoing integration efforts with banks to enable the card’s full functionality, emphasizing that the team is working hard to meet the set goals.
On April 5, 2024, NIMC, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System, announced the new card. This identity solution includes payment capabilities and features designed for social services.
According to a statement, this initiative aims to provide Nigerians with enhanced service options and promote innovative, cost-effective, and competitive service delivery. The new identity cards will include a bank-enabled National ID card, a social intervention card, and an optional ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card.
