Delta State Governor: Protests Aren’t the Solution to Nigeria Governance Issues
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has stated that protests by youths are not a viable solution to the state’s governance challenges. He highlighted concerns from prominent leaders who warned that such actions might be exploited by troublemakers to create chaos.
Prior to the protest’s onset, Oborevwori had engaged with key stakeholders across the state, advising against it. He expressed concerns that the situation could escalate similarly to the #EndSars protests, which resulted in significant loss of life, damage to property, and disruptions to public infrastructure.
As the protest reached its third day, Oborevwori, through his Chief Press Secretary Festus Avon, praised the youth of Delta for maintaining peace throughout the state. He remarked, “I appreciate how our youths have conducted themselves. The Constitution mandates that the security and welfare of the people are the government’s top priorities, and we remain dedicated to safeguarding our citizens and their property.”
The governor also appealed to those leading the protest to cease their activities, cautioning that continuing could worsen the nation’s issues. He reiterated this message during a meeting with Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the National President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), at Government House, Asaba.
Oborevwori said, “Although we understand the frustrations behind the protests, history shows that such actions often lead to adverse outcomes. We acknowledge the protesters’ demands and are striving to address them. Protests alone will not resolve our challenges; instead, unity and peaceful efforts are essential for progress.”
He urged Christian leaders to counsel the youth to remain calm during their services. Additionally, during the inauguration of newly appointed Commissioners and Special Advisers, Oborevwori emphasized the need for innovative and creative approaches to governance given the current economic difficulties.
He encouraged the appointees to be innovative and proactive, stating, “In these challenging times, creative thinking and strategic planning are crucial. As leaders, you must be resourceful, welcome new ideas, and implement policies that meet the real needs and aspirations of our people. It is vital to avoid complacency and immediately engage in effective governance.”
