D’Tigress Storm Back to Beat Philippines 101-84 in FIBA Qualifiers

Villeurbanne, France – Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, the D’Tigress, showcased resilience and tactical brilliance on Saturday as they overcame a first-half deficit to defeat the Philippines 101-84 in a Group A encounter at the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament. The game, which featured relentless action and 12 lead changes, was held at the Astroballe arena in Villeurbanne, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
The visitors from Asia dominated the first half, building a 10-point lead at different stages, including scores of 35-25 and 37-27 in the second quarter. “We let them get ahead early, but we kept our heads,” D’Tigress coach Rena Wakama told The Guardian Nigeria. “Basketball is about adjustments, and our girls showed they can fight back under pressure.”
Nigeria gradually clawed back after the break. By the middle of the third quarter, the African champions erased a five-point deficit with a 17-12 surge. Forward Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah’s turnaround jumper with just over three minutes left in the period leveled the scores at 67-all. Guards Ifunanya Okoro and Elizabeth Balogun combined for nine points during the rally, while Promise Amukamara contributed crucial rebounds to shift momentum in Nigeria’s favor.
“The third quarter was key,” said Balogun in a post-match interview shared on The Nation newspaper’s sports section. “We knew if we stayed aggressive and trusted our system, the game would swing our way.”
The Philippines made brief attempts to counter with outside shots from Janine Pontejos and Louna Ozar, but Nigeria’s dominance inside the paint proved decisive. The turning point came in the fourth quarter, when the D’Tigress executed a 9-0 run between the sixth and fourth minutes, turning a tight 81-80 lead into a commanding 90-80 advantage. Balogun contributed five points with perfect shooting during the surge, effectively putting the game out of reach.
Center Victoria Macaulay was outstanding, finishing with 16 points, six rebounds, five assists, and two blocks in just over 21 minutes. Forward Murjanatu Musa narrowly missed a triple-double with 10 points, 12 rebounds, and eight assists, while Nicole Enabosi added 15 points and 12 rebounds, including a blistering nine-point burst in the opening quarter that kept Nigeria competitive early.
For the Philippines, Pontejos topped the scoring chart with 16 points, aided by an eight-point flurry late in the second quarter, while Kacey Dela Rosa sparked a brief seven-point run in the first period.
The D’Tigress’ most effective lineup consisted of Ezinne Kalu, Amukamara, Macaulay, Balogun, and Musa. The quintet played nearly 16 minutes together and recorded a +12 differential during the match’s critical phases, according to social media reports from Naija Sports Hub.
The victory was a statement response following Nigeria’s 77-60 loss to South Korea in their previous outing, which ended the team’s eight-match competitive winning streak. Nigeria had opened the tournament with a commanding 70-37 win over Colombia.
Although the D’Tigress have already qualified for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup by clinching the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket title, the qualifying tournament provides Coach Wakama with a platform to test squad depth and tactical versatility against strong international opposition.
Nigeria’s next challenge will come against host nation France in the tournament’s final game of the day on Sunday, as the five-game qualifying series runs from March 11 to 17 in Villeurbanne.
