Delta State Mandates CCTV Installation in Public Places, Imposes Severe Penalties

The Delta State government has announced a new directive requiring the installation of CCTV cameras in various public and private establishments, including shopping malls, restaurants, cinemas, supermarkets, gas stations, private parks, event venues, hotels, offices, worship centers, and schools.
According to a statement released on Friday by Dr. Kingsley Emu, the Secretary to the State Government, this measure aims to enhance security in public spaces. This directive enforces a law that took effect on July 28, 2020, but had seen limited compliance.
The government has stated that failure to adhere to this mandate will result in severe penalties, including a two-year imprisonment, a fine of N500,000, and the closure of the non-compliant premises until the required changes are made.
The statement detailed the specifications for the required surveillance equipment:
– **Outdoor Cameras:** 4K bullet CCTV cameras with 8MP resolution and 50 meters night vision capability, capturing high-quality images at up to 20 frames per second.
– **Indoor Cameras:** 4K 8MP dome IP cameras with built-in microphones, starlight video technology for color visibility at night, and weatherproofing (IP67).
– **Speed Dome Cameras:** For streets and roads, these must be 4K 8MP IP cameras featuring high-quality imaging, 32x optical zoom, 16x digital zoom, and advanced night vision.
The government emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader effort to improve security amidst rising crime rates. Failure to install the prescribed cameras will result in legal actions and fines.
The government assured residents of its commitment to their safety and urged everyone to cooperate in enhancing public security and ensuring functional businesses across the state.
