Doctor on the Run After Client Dies During Buttock Enhancement Surgery

The Lagos State Police Command has issued a wanted notice for Dr. Idara Bassey in connection with the death of a 36-year-old woman, Abiola, who died during a buttock enlargement procedure at a clinic in Lekki Phase 1.

Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the development to FIRST CLASS GISTS on Thursday. The tragic incident occurred after Abiola visited the clinic for a Brazilian Butt Lift—a cosmetic surgery that involves transferring fat from other parts of the body to the buttocks.

Reports indicate that a nurse, acting under Dr. Bassey’s instructions, administered an injection that led to Abiola losing consciousness and struggling to breathe. The patient had arrived at the clinic from her home in Diamond Estate, Sangotedo, on Monday for the procedure.

Following the incident, the nurse responsible for the injection has been arrested. However, the clinic’s owner and Dr. Bassey remain at large. Hundeyin confirmed that the clinic’s owner is currently evading capture and that Dr. Bassey is being sought as a suspect in the case.

The Brazilian Butt Lift procedure, while popular, has faced scrutiny due to potential risks and side effects. Similar cases have been reported globally, such as the 2019 death of British woman Melissa Kerr at a private hospital in Istanbul during a similar surgery. The British Broadcasting Corporation reported that Kerr had not received adequate information about the risks before her procedure.
