Edo Council Impeaches Chairman, Suspends Members Over Misconduct

In a significant political development, councilors from the Orhionmwon Local Government Council in Edo State have removed the suspended Council Chairman, Newman Ugiagbe, and his deputy, Midwest Ogbebor, from office. The impeachment took place on Thursday at the local government headquarters in Abudu, with several councilors and the Clerk of the House present.
The leader of the legislative arm, Rt. Hon. Daniel Osarieme, stated that Ugiagbe was removed from his position due to allegations of excessive authoritarianism, corruption, and violations of relevant laws. Before his impeachment, Ugiagbe was also serving as the Chairman of the Association of Local Government Officials of Nigeria (ALGON) in Edo State.
Following Ugiagbe’s ousting, Rt. Hon. Osarieme, who represents Ward 12, was sworn in as the Acting Chairman of the council.
In a related move, the Orhionmwon Legislative Arm announced the suspension of three of its members for financial misconduct and poor performance in their roles. This decision was described as a “bold step” aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance.
The suspended members are Hon. Elizebeth Ehimwenma (Deputy Leader, Ward 07), Rt. Hon. Chuks Isan (Member, Ward 11), and Hon. Osasumwen Ekhator (Member, Ward 03). They were accused of mishandling public funds, breaching financial guidelines, and failing to effectively carry out their duties.
An investigation by the Legislative House’s Ethics Committee reportedly uncovered solid evidence supporting the allegations. In their statement, the legislative body emphasized that these suspensions are part of their effort to restore public trust and maintain high standards of integrity and transparency within the council.
“This action demonstrates the Legislative Arm’s unwavering commitment to upholding the principles of good governance and accountability. The council’s leadership is dedicated to ensuring that all members adhere to the highest ethical standards moving forward,” the statement concluded.
