EFCC Chair: Corrupt Youths Hinder Nigeria’s Prosperity
Ola Olukoyede, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), emphasized that the future potential of Nigeria and Africa is jeopardized by youth involvement in corruption and cybercrime.
“Significant prospects for Nigeria and Africa will remain out of reach if our youths persist in engaging in corruption and cybercrime,” stated Mr. Olukoyede. His remarks were delivered by Hauwa Garba Ringim, Assistant Commander of the EFCC’s Ibadan zonal directorate.
Mr. Olukoyede further noted, “African youths, particularly those in Nigeria, must exhibit exceptional innovation and dedication to positively impact society.”
The EFCC released this statement on Wednesday, following Mr. Olukoyede’s address at the 2024 Royal African Young Leadership Forum (RAYLF) Award ceremony, which took place at Obafemi Awolowo University over the weekend.
In response, many social media users have called on the EFCC to focus more on combating corruption among high-profile politicians rather than targeting youths.
One user, @Vinosky01, posted an image of fugitive politician Yahaya Bello, questioning, “After harassing the youths. Abeg, where is Yahaya Bello?”
Another user, @Blunt_Clime, asserted, “The politicians are the cause of fraud by youths. Prosecute the thieving politicians to secure the future of the youths; otherwise, nothing on earth will stop them from comm
itting fraud.”
