Clarifying the Akure Arrests: A Statement from the EFCC

In light of recent misinformation regarding the arrest of 127 alleged internet fraudsters by the Ibadan Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Saturday, June 8, 2024, it is crucial to set the record straight.

The EFCC conducted a coordinated operation at two clubs in Akure, based on credible intelligence. The operation proceeded without incident, with officers conducting themselves in a professional manner.

Contrary to circulating social media narratives, including a video showing two women with apparent whip marks, the EFCC categorically denies any form of brutality during the operation. This video is suspected to be staged, and the EFCC is conducting a forensic analysis to verify its authenticity and pursue legal action against those responsible for the false claims.

The EFCC asserts that no suspects were assaulted, brutalized, or subjected to inhumane treatment. Additionally, there was no use of tear gas, as EFCC personnel do not carry such equipment during sting operations. The officers involved in the arrests did not possess tear gas canisters or whips.

Regarding the CCTV footage from the scene, it was removed by club staff at the EFCC’s request to preserve evidence for further investigation. One of the arrested suspects, the club manager, confessed to the crime and facilitated the removal of the CCTV device. He is currently assisting the EFCC with the investigation.

The EFCC reiterates its commitment to operating within the bounds of professionalism and respect for human rights. The agency’s Standard Operating Procedure strictly prohibits the use of excessive force or unprofessional conduct.

Profiling of the suspects has been completed, and they will face prosecution accordingly.
