Embracing Reality: Insights from the Discovery for Youth Event on Democracy Day

Otunba Kunle Bolarinde, SLA to the Speaker of HOR
As a Senior Legislative Aid to the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nigeria, I wish to share a perspective on the role of public service and the nature of leadership in times of adversity. It reflects my thoughts on this critical issue.

Otunba Bolarinde
The fundamental duty of a public servant is not to defend the government’s shortcomings or to present false assurances but to elucidate the government’s genuine efforts towards building a sustainable future for all citizens, even amid significant challenges. A public servant must empathize with the people’s struggles, acknowledge their disappointments, and explain that the desired change will inevitably come with its own set of difficulties and sacrifices. These sacrifices, while arduous, will ultimately be embraced as symbols of our collective dedication to our nation’s progress.
Unlike a motivational speaker who may inspire with idealistic visions, a public servant must realistically confront the difficulties ahead. The journey may be fraught with challenges, and we may face periods of intense hardship. However, it is crucial that we remain steadfast and resilient, knowing that this dark period will eventually end and lead us to a brighter future.
I may not possess the charisma of well-known motivational figures like Fela Durotoye, Jimi Tewe, or Toyosi Akerele, but I am one of you. I share in the pains and challenges that you face daily. As a realist who believes in the transformative power of the people, I am an accidental public servant and a political orphan. My aim is to present the truth candidly and to foster a genuine understanding of our shared journey.
