Emir Sanusi: How My Reinstatement is God’s Will
Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, recently reinstated as the Emir of Kano, attributed his return to God’s will and expressed gratitude to the state government for what he called a “rescue mission.” His reinstatement came after Governor Abba Yusuf signed the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024 into law, which led to Sanusi receiving his appointment letter the following day.
At the ceremony where he received his appointment letter, Emir Sanusi emphasized the divine nature of his reinstatement. He reflected on the inevitability of God’s plans, stating, “The Arabians say that every event carries a lesson revealing God’s presence. Whatever happens to a person is preordained by Allah. For those who are wise, this is a lesson. God’s will is unchangeable by anyone.”
Sanusi drew a parallel to his past, noting that he had previously received his appointment letter from former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in the same place a decade earlier. “Today, after 10 years, I am here again receiving a reappointment letter from Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf,” he remarked, underscoring the cyclical nature of fate.
He also acknowledged the efforts of the governor and the Kano State House of Assembly, describing their actions as historic. “My Governor and our assembly members, you will not understand the gravity of what you did for the history of Kano and the country at large,” Sanusi said. He noted that throughout the over 1,000-year history of the Kano Emirate, only once before had an Emir, Muhammadu Koguna, been overthrown and subsequently reinstated.
Sanusi warned of the fragmentation of traditional emirates across northern Nigeria due to political interference, which had led to multiple first-class Emirs within single states. He highlighted the significance of the recent actions in Kano as a preservation of the emirate’s integrity. “Had this fragmentation been allowed to continue, we might have ended up with numerous Emirs for various localities, diluting the historical essence of the Kano Emirate,” he explained.
In conclusion, Sanusi expressed his gratitude to the government and the assembly, emphasizing that their decision was crucial in maintaining the traditional structure and heritage of the Kano Emirate.
