Father Beats Teacher Over Alleged Beating of Daughter in Abuja School
A conflict erupted at Aces Nursery, Primary, and Secondary School in Abuja when a father, Muhammed Jimeta, attacked a teacher, Sekinat Adedeji, for allegedly beating his daughter, Karima Jimeta.
The altercation took place on Tuesday, May 28, 2024.
Recounting the incident to FIRST CLASS GISTS on Wednesday, teacher Sekinat Adedeji explained that she was holding her three-month-old baby when she was assaulted by the father of her pupil, Muhammad Jimeta.
Adedeji, who teaches Karima Muhammad Jimeta in Basic Three, said, “It happened around 12:30 pm on May 29, 2024, when I used a ruler on her leg because she and others were being disruptive and were asked to kneel down.
“The pupil shocked me by making an offensive gesture, which prompted me to use the ruler on her leg.”
The offensive gesture, known as “wanka” or “uwarka” in Hausa, is an abusive expression involving the stretching out of one’s fingers towards someone.
Adedeji continued, “The father slapped me four times around 4 pm, even though our school closes at 3 pm. His daughter reported the incident to him when he came to pick her up after school.
“The child is not serious about her studies and often insults the teachers.”
Magdalene Ukuedojor, a parent who witnessed the incident, alleged that the girl habitually insults everyone and argued that the father had no right to assault a nursing mother and his child’s teacher.
“The teacher was holding her three-month-old baby in a carrier when this man attacked her in front of young children,” Ukuedojor said. “Even though teachers were pleading with him to stop, he continued to assault her. She had to flee the classroom. I saw her outside with a swollen face when I came to pick up my son.”
Ukuedojor added that other teachers, fearing for their jobs, were also upset by the girl’s behavior. “Parents are angry. The father should have reported the issue to school authorities instead of attacking the teacher.”
When FIRST CLASS GISTS reached out to the father, Jimeta, he claimed the teacher had been mistreating his child for weeks. “This woman has been beating my child for a long time. I spoke to the school management about it, and they calmed me down, but she continued to mistreat my daughter and dared us to react.
“If you see the marks and blood on her legs, you would understand why I was furious.”
The school owner, Aminu Kani, did not respond to inquiries from our correspondent.
